What our skins look like?
Our skin, the special organ
Our skin is composed of several layers. From top to bottom, we have the epidermis, made up of dead corneocytes, keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells and basal cells. The basal cells reproduce new cells every few days. Epidermis gives the skin its appearance, color, suppleness, texture, and health. Next, we have the dermis, made up of threadlike proteins including bundles of elastin and collagen, fibroblasts etc , forming the support layer of the skin. The deepest subcutaneous layer consists of well-vascularized, loose, areolar connective tissue and fat tissue, as insulation and cushioning.
Why are our skins not pretty anymore while aging ?
When we are young, the basal cells regenerate actively and our skin has lots of elastin and collagen, components that make our skin appear taut, elastic, hydrated, supple, and smooth. However, while aging, environmental factors, such as solar radiation, pollution etc can accelerate damage to the skin through the generation of so-called reactive oxygen species or free radicals, which slow down cell generation but upregulate products as matrix metalloproteinases (mmPs) to degrade collagen; they increase production of tyrosinase in melanocytes to make more melanin. Slow cell regeneration, lack of collagen and elastin but more melanin produce, gradually leads a callous or dry, aged and thickened skin with wrinkles and dark spots.
