Skin around our eyes is unique
It is the skin delicate, thinner and most sensitive.The deepest subcutaneous layer lies on top of the orbicularis muscle, which moves eyelid. Above, the dermis, which forms the support layer of the skin, is made up of threadlike proteins including bundles of elastin and collagen, fibroblasts, nerves and vessels. On the top is the epidermis, made up of basal cells, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, keratinocytes and the outmost, the dead corneocytes (stratum corneum) . The epidermal layer gives the skin its appearance, color, suppleness, texture, and health.
Why wrinkles and dark eyes ?
When we are young, our skin has lots of elastin and collagen, components that make our skin appear smooth, supple and shining. However, while aging, regeneration/removal of dead cells slows down; environmental factors, such as solar radiation, pollution, etc can accelerate damage to the skin, caused through generation of so-called reactive oxygen species or free radicals. The free radicals in turn slow down cell generation and up-regulate products as matrix metalloproteinases (mmPs) to degrade collagen, and increase production of tyrosinase in melanocytes to make more melanin. Stuck of dead cells, lack of collagen and elastin but more melanin, make our skin around eyes dull, rough and dry with wrinkles and dark spots. The appearance of “crow’s feet” around the eyes caused by orbicularis muscle movements when we smile or laugh is an eminent sign of all these processes.
